Pain Specialists of Cincinnati to become the first Ohio Pain Clinic to recommend Medical Marijuana
For sufferers of chronic pain in Ohio, medical marijuana can be a key component to help control chronic pain and starting Monday February 4th, Pain Specialists of Cincinnati will become the first Ohio pain clinic to add medical marijuana to its long list of therapies to help control chronic pain.
The medical marijuana journey started for Pain Specialists of Cincinnati in early 2018 when Dr. Tayeb became one of the first 33 Ohio physicians to be licensed to recommend medical marijuana. Since that time, Dr. Tayeb and his team have researched the best-in-class protocols, developing new processes, and even opening one of the first physician owned labs in the state with the ability to test for CBD concentrations.
“I am excited about the role that medical marijuana can play for our patients with chronic pain. We are always looking for alternatives to opioids and we anticipate that medical marijuana may be a significant way to reduce the morphine equivalence dose (MED)” said Dr. Zeeshan Tayeb, Chief Medical Officer of Pain Specialists of Cincinnati (and one of the only Pain Physicians with an Ohio Medical Marijuana CTR or certificate to recommend). He continued with “By doing this, we believe that we can lead the state in using medical marijuana as a potential alternative to opioid therapies when combined with more conservative therapies like physical therapy, chiropractic care, interventional procedures and nutritional counseling.”
Although the two main components in marijuana, cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannibinol (THC) are both classified as Schedule 1 drugs under the Controlled Substances Act and thus are illegal from a national standpoint, there are studies that suggest that the benefits of these components are too great to ignore. Laboratory Manager and Director of Research, Majors Badgett PhD explains, “There is a reason that we hear about the opioid crisis so frequently. Despite the effectiveness of opioids in patients dealing with chronic pain, there are many downsides that patients are subjected to on a daily basis. Any potential alternatives, including medical marijuana, are vital in providing the most effective treatment and best care for the patients that have chronic pain.”
Studies also indicate that CBD and THC are also effective for nausea, depression, inflammation, anxiety, and even disorders and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, various eating disorders, asthma, Parkinson’s disease, seizures, and schizophrenia, among others.
